Urea 20—40 mg/dl
Blood urea nitrogen ( BUN) 6 — 20 mg /dl
Children ( BUN ) 5 — 18 mg/dl

A.Impaired renal funtion caused by ;(This may also be called Prerenal causas)
1.congestive heart failure
2.Salt and water depletion
3.Shock
4.Stress
5.Acute MI
6.Haemorrage in to GI tract
B. Chronic renal diseases as ;(These are called Renal causes)
1.Glumerulonephritis
2.Pylenephritis
3.Diabetes mellitis with ketoacidosis
4.Anabolic steroids use
C.Post renal causes : Urinay tract obstruction
Decreased Urea ( BUN ) seen in
1.Liver failure
2.Malnutrition, and low protein diet.
3.Impaired absorption like Caeliac disease
4.Syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic harmone
Some of the drugs may cause decrease in the BUN like Dextrose infusion,Phenothiazine, and Thymol.
Increased BUN level may be seen in late pregnancy and infancy because of increased use of proteins.
